Generator Service & Repair

Onan and other RV generator repair, carburetor service, load testing, and no-start troubleshooting.

What this service covers

A complete approach to the repair

Generator problems generally fall into one of a few buckets: it will not start, it starts but will not carry a load, or it runs rough and shuts down under demand. Onan generators, common on both gas and diesel coaches, frequently develop carburetor varnish or gum buildup from ethanol fuel sitting unused between trips, which causes hard starting or stalling. We clean or rebuild carburetors, check fuel pumps and solenoids, and verify spark and compression before assuming a bigger failure.

A generator that starts fine but trips or bogs under load is a different problem, usually pointing to a failing stator, worn brushes, a bad voltage regulator, or a transfer switch issue rather than the engine itself. We load test generators under realistic conditions, running AC and other high-draw appliances, rather than just confirming it starts and idles, since a generator can look fine at idle and still fail the moment real demand hits it.

We also handle routine generator maintenance: oil and filter changes, air filter service, and exercising schedules, since generators that sit unused for long stretches, common with seasonal RV use, are the ones most likely to develop fuel and starting issues.

Signs you may need this service

Generator will not start or cranks without firing

Starts but stalls shortly after, especially under any load

Runs rough, surges, or produces inconsistent power output

Trips breaker or shuts down when AC or other high-draw appliances start

Excessive smoke, unusual noise, or fuel smell during operation

Has not been run in months and now will not start reliably

How we handle it

  1. 1

    Starting system check

We check battery, starter, solenoid, and spark or glow plug function depending on fuel type.

  2. 2

    Fuel system service

We inspect and clean or rebuild the carburetor and fuel delivery components, common on units that have sat unused.

  3. 3

    Load testing

We run the generator under real electrical load, not just idle, to confirm it holds voltage and frequency under demand.

  4. 4

    Maintenance and verification

We complete oil, filter, and air filter service as needed and confirm stable operation across a full run cycle.

Mobile or in-shop

Generator diagnostics, carburetor service, and load testing are done at your location using portable load banks and test equipment. Major internal engine work or stator replacement is sometimes brought into the shop depending on parts access and the specific unit.

Questions we get

That is a classic sign of a load-carrying problem rather than a starting problem, often a stator, voltage regulator, or transfer switch issue that only shows up under the higher current draw of compressor start-up.
